A Word from Dr Irena Yashin-Shaw

Dear NSAAQ members

As 2009 draws to a close it is an appropriate time to reflect on the year that was and look to the year ahead.

This year has seen some tough times for speakers with the speaking industry being affected by the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). Many organisations and associations have opted to use ‘internal speakers’ rather than pay professional speakers for their events. Training and development budgets have been cut as they often are in downturns—despite all the research that shows that organisations that do so hurt themselves badly in the long run.

I’ve learnt two things this year that have helped to build a sustainable speaking business. The first valuable lesson came from our National President, Brad Tonini CSP who facilitated one of our CSP/PM Hubs earlier this year, and that was that we need to position ourselves as a core and not a discretionary spend. That way even in tough times our services are indispensable. The second lesson I’ve learnt this year from my own personal experience is that our business models needs to be very flexible and adaptable—ready to move into different niches and market sectors as opportunities arise. We are all ideally placed to do that. Most speakers have ‘micro’ businesses where our brand is built around us—the speaker—so we can be incredibly responsive to changes in the market place. This goes somewhat against the conventional wisdom we sometimes hear: that a speaker should niche in one sector. Personally that wouldn’t have worked for me this year. Whatever your lessons for 2009—I hope you leverage the learning from them to create a hugely successful 2010. The professional development opportunities we offer our members in NSAA  can certainly help with that.

Over the last few months NSAA has been going through an exciting time of re-creation and re-engineering. There are a number of new initiatives on the drawing board designed to add even more value and momentum for our members. This is a great time to be a part of the NSAA community.

In this final missive from me I want to thank our wonderful 2009 Chapter Leadership Team. Without their hard work the Queensland Chapter would not have had such a great year. Tony Ryan, Dr. Lewe Atkinson, Suzanne Goodchild, Kevin Ryan, Diane Robertson, Andreas Dagalet, Leonie Russell, Lauren Posterns, Julie McLeod, Matthew Lang,  Karen St. Clare, Alison Nicholson, Alison Williams and Linda Benn—thank you all for your good will, good humour and a job well done.

2010 will be a truly spectacular year for our chapter. Tony Ryan CSP will be stepping into the role of President and he has an innovative agenda, which you will hear about soon. I can assure you that we are all in good hands. Our first meeting next year on February 16 at the HILTON will feature the legendary Glen Capelli CSP, a recipient of the prestigious NSAA Educator Award for Excellence. Make sure you register early for his workshop on Wednesday February 17, because it will be very popular.

See you on Tuesday night for our Grand Finale with the famous Amanda Gore.

Have a wonderful festive season.

Best wishes
Dr. Irena Yashin-Shaw PhD

Magical Messages: How to be memorable

World class professional speaker Amanda Gore CSP CPAE will be addressing the December Christmas meeting of the Queensland NSAA. Amanda is a sensational speaker, and is a feature presenter at many major United States conferences.

BOOK HERE NOW

Here are Amanda's very own comments on what she will offer at this exciting meeting:

Since I have been back in Australia, I have been amazed at how many people have come up to me (at almost every presentation I have done) and they say: I saw you speak 15 years ago. And then they quote bits of what they learned years ago!! The reason they remember for so long is the magic in any presentation—the process behind the content—the group dynamics. Michael Grinder with whom I studied for 15 years taught me all about the non-verbal magic in teaching and this is some of what we will cover at this event.

Her presentation will conclude with a 10 minute Question and Answer session.

A powerful session: Not to be missed!!
